Due to a time conflict with a job candidate's interview, class is cancelled on Tuesday, Feb. 29.  On Thursday, March 2nd I have to be in Baltimore for the Eastern Sociological Society meetings.  Hence no class this week!

Please use this time to 1) complete the Virtual Tour by Friday, March 3rd; 2) get started on the reading for Tuesday, March 7th; 3) choose your research topic.

Gilbert Ch. 6.  Class cancelled due to another (but thankfully the last!) conflict with an incoming job candidate's schedule.  Do the reading nonetheless.
Spring Break  Be reading the MacLeod book
Tues. March 21 MacLeod, Chs. 1-6.  We'll also review Gilbert Ch. 6.
Thurs. March 23 MacLeod, Chs. 7-8.  Please access and read the following New York Times articles: James Fallows, "The Invisible Poor," a very interesting exploration of why poverty has become relatively invisible and not on the nation's political agenda.  It is accompanied with an interesting photo gallery, "In the Shadow of Wealth," with several quite striking photographs.  
Gina Kolata, "For Those Who Can Afford It, Old Style Medicine Returns," about how the medical system is fracturing into a several-tiered system based on class.
Tues. March 28 Finish MacLeod book, including chapter at the end on how he conducted his study.
Thurs. March 30 Film: Roger and Me.  Read article on Camden (handout)

Poster Session Presentations (up to 5 points extra credit for presenting your ethnographic research findings in a visual way).  Note: all students invited, whether you have a poster presentation or not.  12:15-2:00, Multi-Purpose Room, Campus Center.  Lunch provided.
