Advanced Placement

The Advanced Placement Program is for those who are already REGISTERED NURSES and who are seeking the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (R.N. to B.S.N.)

The Department of Nursing at RUTGERS - THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY, Camden College of Arts and Sciences, offers the Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing as an upper-division program. Nursing Major courses are taken in the junior and senior (3rd and 4th) years of the undergraduate program, which allow Registered Nurses and other students to transfer directly into the Nursing Major from two-year and four-year colleges.

  • If you are already a Registered Nurse from an RN diploma school or associates degree RN program, you may transfer in up to 64 credits from a two-year college and unlimited credits from a four-year college. Your last 30 credits earned toward a Rutgers degree must be taken at Rutgers.

  • The Advanced Placement program is designed so that if you have all of the prerequisite courses completed, you can complete the BS in one full year of study. This may be difficult to do because of your work schedule and family responsibilities. However, you may space out coursework and timing on an individual basis.

  • Once you come into the system, you will be awarded 20 credits for having passed the NCLEX licensing examination, and you will be exempt from Nursing II and Nursing III courses. We have designed our program for registered nurses so the you can build upon your existing foundation and experiences but not repeat what you have already learned.

  • You may challenge courses within the Rutgers system at the department level. Each student does this individually, following the guidelines within the Camden College of Arts & Sciences catalogue.

  • The College of Nursing in Newark has its Masters program available on Camden Campus as a satellite program. The facilities of the College of Nursing in Newark and the Camden College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Nursing work collaboratively to assist registered nurses in attaining their BSN and MSN degrees. For example: If a student graduates from the undergraduate program at Rutgers CCAS with a GPA of 3.2 or better, the graduate is eligible to apply to the Masters program within the year after graduation without taking the Graduate (GRE) Record Examination. Additionally, a student may take up to 12 credits as a non-matriculated student in the graduate program. If a student is doing well academically in the undergraduate program, the individual may take coursework toward the Masters of Science without additional payment. The University charges full-time tuition only once, and this is for 12 or more credits.

Interested students should contact the Department of Nursing at 856.225.6226 or e-mail us for general information and/or an appointment for academic advisement.

Each student will be considered individually and a proposed course of study discussed. The RN student is considered an 'Advanced Placement Student' by virtue of prior education, experience and graduation from an NLN accredited professional nursing program. All students must obtain general admission to Rutgers University Camden College of Arts and Sciences before applying to the Department of Nursing.
