Kenneth E. Kendall

Welcome to the home page for Kenneth E. Kendall. I am a professor of Management in the School of Business, Rutgers University, Camden, New Jersey, USA. I research and teach in the areas of systems analysis and design, decision support systems, management science and operations management. One important period in my career arose when I served as Chair for the IFIP Working Group 8.2 from 1990-1993. Another key achievement was that I helped to found the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), which now in attracts more than a thousand information systems researchers to its conference annually.

Current Research Interests

My research focuses on developing new tools for systems analysts, improving the pedagogy of systems analysis and design; and researching innovative decision support systems applications. The products of this research have been disseminated through publications in scholarly refereed journal articles including Management Science, MIS Quarterly , Decision Sciences, Operations Research, Information & Management and many others. I recently edited a special research issue of Decision Sciences devoted to "Emerging Information Technologies: Current Uses, Potential Influences, and Future Organizational Prospects."  My article in this volume is entitled "The Significance of Information Systems Research on Emerging Technologies: Seven Information Technologies that Promise to Improve Managerial Effectiveness." My research has also been published in edited books and a mainstream textbook, Systems Analysis and Design (now in its fourth edition), and I have given many national and international research presentations.

Books

I have co-authored a mainstream textbook, Systems Analysis and Design Systems Analysis and Design, with Julie E. Kendall, published by Prentice Hall, which is now in its fourth edition. It is innovative in its extensive coverage of analysis techniques and its complete chapter-by-chapter integration of CASE (computer aided software engineering) tools, and it includes an entire chapter devoted to object oriented systems analysis and design. Additionally, it features an interactive computer case called HyperCase. The first edition of our book was translated into Spanish, Analisis Y Diseno De Sistemas, translated by Hector Lopez Hernadez in 1991.

I have also co-edited a research volume, The Impact of Computer Supported Technologies on Information Systems Development, with Kalle Lyytinen and Janice I. DeGross, published by North-Holland in 1992.

Positions on Editorial Boards

I serve on several editorial boards for many scholarly journals. I am an Associate Editor for Decision Sciences. I also serve as MIS Editor for the Journal of Management Systems. For the past few years I have been serving as Functional Editor for MIS for Interfaces. I am Associate Editor for the international journal, Journal of Information Systems. Additionally, I am an Associate Editor for the Information Resources Management Journal.

Teaching Interests

I currently teach undergraduate and graduate decision support systems; management science, and production/operations management, in the School of Business-Camden, Rutgers University. I serve on the Teaching Excellence Center Advisory Board at Rutgers-Camden.

In order to improve methods of teaching systems analysis and design at both the graduate and undergraduate levels I have co-developed HyperCase which is an interactive, microcomputer case grounded in hypertext concepts. HyperCase provides students with a means to become immediately immersed in organizational life by interviewing people, observing their office environments, analyzing prototypes, and reviewing documentation of their existing systems.

Professional Societies

I have been very active in the Decision Sciences Institute. I have served as a Vice President for DSI for the last two years. This year I am serving as MIS Track Co-Chair for the International Decision Sciences Institute Meeting to be held in Athens, Greece in July of 1999. I will be serving as MIS Track Chair for the DSI national meeting in New Orleans next autumn. One of my most treasured activities for AIS was to serve as Captain of the East Team for the First IS Trivia Bowl held during AIS in Indianapolis in 1997. My key memberships in professional societies include:

Decision Sciences Institute (DSI)

Association for Information Systems (AIS)

Association of Management

International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) WG 8.2

Information Resources Management Association (IRMA)

Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS)

Northeast Decision Sciences Institute (NEDSI)

Personal Interests

I have a wide range of recreational interests. But even when I relax, I can't get too far away from my computer because I enjoy computer simulation games such as SIM City 2000 and Civilization. I also have a private pilot's license and commercial photography ability. A few years ago I helped write the new lyrics to the Rutgers alma mater, "On the Banks."
