Workshops are non-credit programs offered by the University to enhance the Summer options of students, teachers, business individuals and other professionals. Some offer college credits beyond the program and costs of the workshop themselves, while others offer professional credits (such as Professional Development Credits for Teachers). 22nd ANNUAL SUMMER WRITERS' CONFERENCE
JUNE 23 through JULY 2, 2008
An intensive program of workshops and readings, featuring a staff of nationally-known writers, poets and editors, aimed at intermediate and advanced writing students. The series of workshops, lectures and lunch meetings is open to both Rutgers students and the community, though some prior workshop or professional experience is required. It may be taken for either undergraduate or graduate credit as well as on a non-credit "certificate" basis. Workshop fee is $450. The program also features free evening readings by the authors.

Students will attend daily workshop sessions in the morning and afternoon with professionals in the field. Two pieces of writing will be reviewed by the participants, one during the conference and the second by mail afterwards. Workshops will be held for Fiction, Personal Essay, and Poetry.

This year participating instructors include Veronica Chambers, Jim Daniels, Jonathan Galassi, Lee Gutkind, Karen Karbo and others. 33rd ANNUAL ARTIST TEACHER INSTITUTE
Sponsored by the NJ Council for the Arts, Geraldine Dodge Foundation, Victoria Foundation, and Arts Horizons.
July 21 to August 1, 2008, M-F 9:00am-3:00pm

A summer arts immersion program for classroom teachers, arts teachers, administrators, student teachers, and artists. Hands-on studio workshops in various media offer participants opportunities to:

  • Study with master artists in a hands-on, interactive learning environment.
  • Extend individual artistic abilities and develop teaching techniques.
  • Integrate the art form into the classroom for creative teaching and learning.
  • Emerge refreshed, renewed, energized and inspired with fresh perspectives.
Participants may earn up to 72 hours of Professional Development credit, or may apply for Graduate Credit through the Liberal Studies Program. Courses meet Monday through Friday for two weeks. The morning session, 9am-noon focuses on the participants’ major area of interest, while the afternoon session 1pm-3pm encourages participants to explore another area. Breakfast and lunch are provided on campus. There will also be two follow up workshops on Saturdays in the Fall and Spring.

Workshops for 2008 are:
Poetry: composing and work-shopping poetry, including tools of how to pass on poetry skills. Instructor: Peter Murphy, poet and teacher.
Storytelling: Caught by the Tale: develop storytelling skills and learn the oral tradition. Instructor: Queen Nur, professional storyteller.
Book Arts: explores printmaking, bookbinding, and the relationship between image, text, and structure. Instructor: Mary Phelan from the University of the Arts.
Memoir: Writing with Heart and Craft: writing from life, honing the writing craft, issues with writing about living people. Instructor: Anndee Hochman, freelance journalist and author.
Creative Movement: basic elements of movement and theater play - expressing concepts through body movement. Instructor: Christine Bodwitch from Rhombus Dance.
Visual Arts: experience world art traditions in a variety of media. Instructor: Barbara Bullock, artist and teacher.
Music: Composition, Notation & Instrument Making: composing and notating music, including creation of unique musical instruments. Instructor: Tina Davidson, composer.

School/District Group Rate (3 or more): $475 each.
A limited number of scholarships are available for New Jersey residents. Please submit the registration form along with a letter stating why you want to attend ATI and a letter of recommendation. A $50 non-refundable fee is payable upon our notification of your scholarship award.

Graduate credit is available through Rutgers-Camden Liberal Studies program. The student must register for the course Fine Arts Theory and Practice I (Cr.3), course number 56:606:607:Sec.J1, using the normal student registration form (to the left) in addition to filling out the ATI registration form below. Tuition for the credits is above and beyond the costs for ATI, and must be paid by the normal course deadlines to receive credit. PINELANDS PRESERVATION ALLIANCE:
Life Science Field Training Institute
for Science Educators

Running June 23 to June 27, 8:30am-4:30pm

at the Pinelands Research Station in New Lisbon, NJ (for directions see website at http://marine.rutgers.edu/pinelands).

This field based program will introduce participants to a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats, where various topics in the biological and environmental sciences will be explored, including general ecology, population dynamics, community interactions, field sampling techniques, endangered species conservation, biodiversity, water pollution, resource use and biostatistics. Participating science educators will be better prepared to incorporate student collected data sets and investigations into the lab and lecture components of their curricula.

The course will be run by PPA staff, but graduate credits will be offered for those who enroll through Rutgers and complete additional assignments to mere participation in the course. GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION TEST PREPARATORY WORKSHOPS
This intensive workshop series run by Dr. Anthony Poplawski (senior associate at the Rohrer Center) helps you learn how to better manage the test, budget your time and reduce your anxiety. Learn how the test questions are designed. This makes finding the correct answer among the multiple choices easier. Once your anxiety is reduced, you will be prepared to succeed. We will cover guessing techniques and time management. We’ll also analyze incorrect answers.

GMAT Prep Course Goals

  • To reduce test anxiety.
  • You will familiarize yourself with the tasks you must perform; and you will develop and master an attack plan specific to each question type.
  • To learn the character of the question types.
  • You will rehearse the logic, rhetoric, and math employed in a multiple choice form.
  • To learn effective management; and to reduce anxiety by elevating your score in practice testing.
Thus, you will become familiar with the structure of the test; you will develop an attack plan specific to each psychometric question type on the test, and you will review logical, rhetorical and mathematical problem-solving techniques

Workshop fee of $295 includes instructional materials and parking fees.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETING/MANAGEMENT PROGRAM WITH TRIP TO FRANCE
Running June 6 - June 15

Introduction to the concepts, framework and issues of global business and how they influence management decisions: multinational firms, international trade, and the cultural, political, institutional, social and economic environment of the global marketplace.

The School of Business-Camden (SBC) offers a study program on doing business in France. The program highlight is a 10-day study trip (June 6 - June 15) to France, where we visit businesses and government institutions to learn more about management and marketing practices in this region. The course is open to MBA and undergraduate business students.

Students will earn their choice of three marketing or management credits. In addition to tuition, the cost of the trip will be approximately $1,950. Students must also have valid passport.
